Self-Care Redefined: Why Investing in Yourself is Essential, Not Optional
Investing in yourself isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. We’ve been conditioned to believe that self-care is selfish, that mental health maintenance is an indulgence and that moving our bodies is a chore rather than a privilege.
I’m calling BS on all of it.
You can’t wait around for someone to give you permission to put yourself first, you have to choose to do this – NOW.
Developing a holistic approach to self-care isn’t merely about pampering; it's about fostering growth, resilience, and a deeper sense of purpose.
So why is it important to nurture mind, body and spirit?
Mentally: Investing in yourself mentally means continuously expanding your knowledge, nurturing a positive mindset and having people you can talk to whether that’s a trusted friend or a therapist.
Many of us wait until our back is up against the wall before prioritising your mental health. But just as your car needs a regular service, so does the mind.
A daily practice of meditation and gratitude is fantastic place to start to ensure you’re looking after your mental health on a regular basis.
Physically: Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest are the cornerstone of a healthy and vibrant life. By taking care of your body, you not only improve your physical health but also enhance your energy levels, productivity, and overall quality of life. If the idea of going to the gym makes you feel nauseous, seek out an activity that brings you joy and fulfilment such as yoga, hiking, dancing, or any other form of movement that resonates with you.
Spiritually: Enhancing your spiritual life transcends religious beliefs and encompasses a deep connection with oneself, others, and the world around you.
It involves practices that nourish the soul, such as meditation, prayer, reflection, and acts of kindness. Cultivating a sense of purpose and inner peace is essential for navigating life's challenges with grace and authenticity. By investing in your spiritual well-being, you can find meaning, fulfilment, and a greater sense of belonging in the universe.
Always being one to live what I say, here’s how I’m showing up for myself this year:
Mentally: I’ve taken the leap and joined a 12-month Master Mind Coaching program; this is going to enable me to up-skill my coaching so that I can offer an even more expansive experience for my clients. Investing in a mentor last year was an absolute game-changer for me. I truly believe if you want to get somewhere, you should work with someone who’s already achieved what you want. Whether that be in life, business or even relationships. I’ll continue to work with mentors for as long as I choose to continue growing.
Physically: I’ve started working with a personal trainer online who’s transformed my exercise and eating habits. I’ve fallen back in love with strength training and I’m finally understanding how to eat a balanced diet (only took me 36 years!) Having been someone who in the past has restricted and therefore been unable to maintain consistency, this is a new way of eating and moving that I can actually stick to long term.
Spiritually: My meditation and prayer practice is a staple in my life. Along with this I attend regular 12-Step meetings which helps me to maintain my spiritual fitness. This year I’m committed to exploring more in the world of Buddhist philosophy and Hindu practices.
There’s no better time than the present. Open up “Notes” in your phone and write down one goal to nourish yourself
1. Mentally
2. Physically
3. Spiritually.
I’d love you to share this on your socials and tag. Let’s support one another to de-stigmatise self-care and normalise prioritising YOU!
